LARC hosts free, in-person gatherings once a month, ranging from casual happy hours to panels to hands-on workshops. These events are geared towards giving insight into the journalistic process and building connections through a supportive peer community.

10/15 - LARC X TKTK Happy Hour
In October, LARC In May, LARC co-hosted an event with Tyler Kingkade (NBC News) and the TKTK Happy Hour series. The get-together welcomed journalists and other civic media makers for conversation and collaboration.
9/25 - Press Pause: Self-Care Night for Journalists
In partnership with the LA Press Club, this evening invited journalists to step away from the news cycle and recharge through guided mini-sessions in art, yoga, and breathwork. Participants explored new self-care practices in a relaxed setting while building community with peers across Los Angeles.
8/26 - The Ethics Of True Crime & Documentary Storytelling
In August, LARC hosted a panel on the true crime genre, with focus on how to investigate a murder with care, patience, and integrity. The discussion featured Jenn Swann (My Friend Daisy), Hayley Fox (Lost Hills: Dark Canyon), Janice Llamoca (Party Crews: The Untold Story) and Rachel Mason (Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna). With panelists covering stories from Compton to Malibu, Hollywood to Boyle Heights, they shared how they developed relationships in local communities, uncovered new evidence and navigated the ethical gray areas of telling other people’s hardest stories. The conversation took place at frankradio, an independent radio station that prioritizes in-depth, meaningful conversation.
7/24 - Protest Safety Training For Journalists
LARC and LA Press Club co-hosted an evening dedicated to immigration coverage. Held at the LA Press Club’s theater in Historic Filipinotown, the evening featured local reporters and editors working to center humanity, safety and truth-telling in a summer of enforcement and raids.
Speakers included Dana Amihere (Founder/Executive Director of AfroLA), Jessica Perez (Senior Editor of Boyle Heights Beat), Jeremy Lindenfeld (Reporter, Capital and Main), and Mariah Castañeda (Audience Director and Co-Founder of LA Public Press), and the discussion was moderated by Leslie Berestein Rojas (Associate Professor of Professional Practice and Director of Audio News at USC Annenberg).
6/23 - Protest Safety Training For Journalists
Against the backdrop of ICE raids and protests, LARC teamed up with the Committee to Protect Journalists and LA Press Club to host a free journalism safety training workshop. The workshop focused on how to cover protests, immigration enforcement and other high-risk stories. Led by veteran journalist safety expert Colin Pereira.

4/16 - Video Storytelling Panel with Signal Awards
Signal’s Jemma Brown moderated a conversation with YouTube’s Product Lead for Podcasting, Steve McLendon, and Headspace’s Director of Podcasts, Daniel Carissimi, exploring how visual formats are reshaping the future of audio storytelling. Together, they unpacked the growing role of video companions in reaching audiences, expanding narrative possibilities, and adapting to evolving listener habits.
March 2025 | An Evening at LAist with Reasonable Volume
LARC partnered with LAist Studios for an evening of reporting and skill-building in Pasadena. Journalist and producer Rachel Swaby walked attendees through the behind-the-scenes process of the narrative miniseries, The Other Moonshot, sharing practical tips on reporting, structuring, and producing narrative audio. The event also included breakout discussions and mentor pairing aimed at supporting early-career journalists.
Feb 2024 | LARC x Western Sound
LARC hosted Story + Craft in partnership with the Peabody-winning studio Western Sound and the Stony Brook Podcast Incubator. Held at North Fig Studios, the evening brought together audio journalists, sound designers, and narrative producers for a night of community and conversation.

LARC co-hosted a journalism happy hour with TKTK Happy Hour founder & NBC News reporter Tyler Kingkade, bringing together journalists and audio storytellers for an evening of connection.
Dec 2024 | LARC Reporting Incubator Workshop
LARC hosted a free workshop at AITP focused on our 2025 Reporting Incubator. Attendees joined breakout discussions, shared works-in-progress, and connected with fellow journalists over food and conversation.

May 2024 | LARC Workshop: Writing For The Ear @ AITP
For our May 2024 LARC event, we held a workshop focused on "Writing For The Ear." We looked at different ways to start a story and what comprises a strong beginning. Attendees paired up to write their own episode intros, culminating in group critiques.
March 2024 | LARC x KCRW Party @ Navel LA
KCRW and LARC partnered up to throw a party for local audio storytellers & journalists on March 15th. We offered a number of mentoring “tune-up” sessions and speakers from LA publications, along with food and drinks from local vendors.
